Lately it seems like flags are everywhere on clothes and accessories. Whether it be a wild backpack or awesome kicks, being patriotic is cool again. I found a boring pair of denim shorts, and got a few materials to make my own American shorts! You need: an old pair of shorts, fabric paint, paint brushes, and studs (optional.) Have holes in your shorts? While at the craft store, pick up a bandana, a needle and some thread.

Paint the left back pocket a solid blue and the right back pocket red and white striped. The stripes can be thick or thin, however you want. Don’t worry if it turns out a little messy, its homemade and that’s half the fun!

I used studs to create the star allusion on the blue pocket, but making paint stars or iron-on stars are fun too! If the pocket is thin enough, just push the stud prongs through. If not, use an exacto knife to make holes for the prongs. Use pliers to push the prongs down and to tighten them so they don’t fall out. I didn’t have pliers, so I used a popsickle stick, just make sure they are tight! Make the studs in whatever shape or order you want.

For the front holes, cut a piece of the bandana and arrange it on the inside of the hole. Use your needle and thread to basic stitch it on and be sure to triple knot when done.

Voila! You now have your own, original pair of American flag shorts! xoxo allie
